The east-west highway linking Shanghai to Chongqing has been completed, with the final 320km section in Hubei province opening to traffic on Saturday. According to a Xinhua report, the 1,900km-long Shanghai-Chongqing National Highway will reduce journey times between the cities to just 17 hours.

A well has become a hot topic in asmall north China town after it began gushing water at a scolding 104 degrees Celcius — despite the outdoor temperature being 17 degrees below freezing.
Water temperatures of hot-spring wells in Yanggao County, about 52 kilometers to the west of China’s coal city Datong in northern Shanxi Province, normally range from 25 to 45 degrees Celcius.

Bicycles are to be banned from the Shanghai Metro from 1 March 2010. According to a Shanghai daily report, the new ruling is being enforced to increase safety and prevent overcrowding. The ban will also apply to folding bicycles.

Visitors to the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai will be transported from major city locations to the Expo park using free electric buses, the Oriental Morning Post has reported. The buses will run on two routes to the park with 20 stops on each. Four Metro lines will also give access to the park.

China Railway Construction Corp has said it won CNY9.9 billion (US$1.45 billion) of contracts, Bloomberg has reported. China’s road, railway, civil aviation, and waterway transport sectors expect to carry a record 565 million people during the National Day holiday, according to the country’s transportation departments.
