San Francisco tapas bar propelled by owner’s blog

October 6th, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO - Contigo Kitchen + Cava, an engaging, Catalan-style tapas bar in the city’s Noe Valley section, was destined to succeed even before it opened last spring. Owner Brett Emerson had won admirers at some of the Bay Area’s top eateries, including Greens, Chez Panisse, and Cocoa 500.
But what really pushed Emerson’s restaurant into the limelight was his blog, In Praise of Sardines, in which he championed his passion for Spain and his obsession with Iberian food. He also Read more…

Sweet potato and sausage bisque

July 17th, 2009

Serves 6
Joseph Randall developed this recipe after a visit to Lafayette, La. He starts it with what he calls the “holy trinity’’ of Southern cooking - onion, green pepper, and celery sauteed in plenty of butter. Use any smoked, hot sausage you can find and vary the amount of hot sauce depending on the heat in your sausage. This version of Randall’s recipe dramatically reduces the butter; the original called for a half-pound. M.E. MALONE

Stay the night: Legado Mitico, Buenos Aires

December 29th, 2008

Plush and private on the stylish side of town
While most new hotels in the modish barrio of Palermo Viejo are riding the design wave, arranging minimalist white chairs with frightening precision, Legado Mitico is striking a different pose.
The brainchild of two architects and antiques collectors, this intimate hotel works a thoroughly classy, and classic, brand of Argentine chic: rich, thick fabrics, plumped-up antique chairs and carefully edited artwork are set against a grown-up colour palette Read more…

The Local Flavor of Helsinki’s Food Revival

December 17th, 2008

I told a friend who lives in St. Petersburg that I was going to Helsinki . He wrote, “Enjoy your herring … and your reindeer.” Even through the e-mail message, I could hear his sneer. Finland ’s cuisine has been historically maligned. In 2001, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy argued that Finland did not deserve to house the European Union ’s food-safety agency because “Finns don’t even know what prosciutto is.”
Four years later came the next international incident. Exercising his diplomatic Read more…
